Our baggage allowance for the international segment is 2 checked bags, 1 carry-on bag, and 1 personal item. This includes anything we want to bring from home; we will be fitted for extreme cold weather gear at the facility in Christchurch, New Zealand.
From the East Coast, I flew to San Francisco, then to Auckland, and finally to Christchurch. Since the flight crosses the international dateline, I left home on Saturday morning (Dec 7) and arrived in Christchuch on Monday afternoon (Dec 9)!
Boarding the Air New Zealand flight from Auckland to Christchurch.
Flying over the mountains of New Zealand's South Island.
Upon arrival, I was greeted by someone from the US Antarctic Program and received an envelope with information about the next few days in Christchurch. Along with a few other scientists, I took a shuttle from the airport to the hotel where I met up with the other members from my experiment that I will be traveling with the rest of the way.
We got dinner with another group from our experiment that was supposed to travel to Antarctica more than a week ago, but have been delayed due to weather! It seems likely we will also be delayed, but we will continue preparing in the meantime and be ready for anything.
Arrival in Christchurch.
