December 16, 2024
The first few days are intended to be very low key, so we have time to acclimate to the elevation. We arrived at 4AM on Saturday morning, so after a short station orientation, I got a few hours of much needed sleep.
Our first view of the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, our home for the next 5-6 weeks!
Later in the day we took a short walk to the Geographic South Pole marker. The station is on top of a glacier that shifts about 30 feet per year, so every year, the South Pole marker has to be moved so that it continues marking the true geographic pole. The folks that stay on station over the winter design a new marker every year. The current one was designed by someone in IceCube!
There is an additional "ceremonial" South Pole marker near the station that is surrounded by various flags. Stay tuned for photos of the Ceremonial South Pole!

On Sunday we had a brief meeting to discuss the cargo that arrived, went out to the outbuildings to look through it, and took a tour of the IceCube Laboratory building. The IceCube building is about a 20 minute walk from the main station.
Looking through cargo
Some cargo is labeled "Do not freeze" and is therefore store inside upon arrival.
First trip to the IceCube building. I am on the far left.
